A label that has followed Julius Randle throughout his NBA career is moodiness. That was clear in his final season with the Timberwolves in 2025-26, and it could’ve been a big reason why they decided to trade him in the offseason.
Randle was dealt to the Brooklyn Nets as part of a four-team deal that helped Minnesota land LaMelo Ball. Randle spoke to the New York Post earlier this week, and he made some interesting comments.
“When you’re somewhere where you’re really wanted, and you have that validation with an organization really appreciating you and what you bring to the table, it’s an incredible feeling,” he was quoted as saying.
Those comments are interesting because he was quoted as saying almost exactly the same thing after Minnesota acquired him before the 2024-25 season, along with Donte DiVincenzo, as part of the package that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to New York.
“You want to be somewhere where you feel wanted. I feel wanted here,” he told ESPN’s Jamal Collier roughly 24 months ago, in October 2024. “At this point in my career, I’ve accomplished a lot of great things on an individual level, but I want to win a championship. This is a perfect opportunity to do that.”
It’s pretty remarkable to hear essentially the same reaction two years apart. Maybe Randle needs to look at himself in the mirror and realize he could be part of the issue. Minnesota head coach Chris Finch brought up his team’s moodiness many times when Randle was involved, and everyone close to the Wolves seemed to agree.
“Everyone immediately looks at Julius Randle and he is certainly one of the culprits… They could be Eeyore every once in a while… Julius certainly was a part of that when his name got brought up in the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade talks. He didn’t really like that at all and he wears his heart on his sleeve, so you could see that,” Wolves insider Jon Krawcznski said on the Basketball Illuminati podcast.
“But Naz Reid could get moody, Jaden McDaniels could get moody. Like, there’s a lot of quiet, brooding personalities that were in the locker room last year. You bring LaMelo Ball in here and he’s much more upbeat and energetic, so there’s definitely been a vibe shift.”
