The Los Angeles Clippers are in the midst of a troubling five-game losing streak, and it’s no coincidence that Kawhi Leonard has missed four of those games. The six-time All-Star was able to play the first six games of the season and put up averages of 24.3 points on 50.5% shooting, 5.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.5 steals and 2.3 triples in 33.5 minutes per contest.
Leonard, however, suffered a sprained ankle earlier this month, and has since been out of commission. A new report has now emerged which has cast further doubt on Leonard’s return to action in the immediate future.
Leonard is currently in his seventh year with the Clippers, including the 2021-22 campaign, which he sat out entirely due to a torn ACL. Last season, he was limited to just 37 games due to an injury to the same knee.
NBA senior reporter Shams Charania provided an update on Leonard on Wednesday. According to Charania, the six-time All-NBA small forward is now expected to miss a few more games because of his latest ankle problem. The silver lining, however, is that the Clippers are reportedly optimistic that Leonard will be back “sooner rather than later.”
At the moment, there is no firm timetable on when Leonard will return. Charania’s report corroborates Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue’s comments on Saturday indicating that the team expects Leonard to sit out “the next few games.”
It is important to note that the Clippers received some unfortunate news on Bradley Beal on Wednesday. The three-time All-Star suffered a fractured hip and is now set to undergo season-ending surgery, according to Charania.
The Clippers are back in action on Wednesday. They will be shorthanded yet again when they host Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets for a home game at Intuit Dome. Tip-off for that one is scheduled for 11:30 p.m. ET.
