The Los Angeles Clippers’ 2025-2026 season has been marred by multiple controversies, both on and off the court. Kawhi Leonard’s shady $28 million deal with Aspirations was all over the news in mid-2025. Then, when the new season started, the team struggled on the court, mostly due to injuries, which only added to their woes.
But surprisingly, the team seemingly turned their season around by winning games. However, with James Harden and Ivica Zubac gone, the Clippers are in murky waters again. Add to that the NBA’s investigation into Kawhi’s controversial partnership with Aspirations, and it looks like the franchise will have a not-so-good offseason looming.
The NBA is weighing potential penalties for the Clippers that could include these options:

– Stripping draft picks
– Banning Steve Ballmer from the arena
– Invalidating Kawhi Leonard’s contract to make him an unrestricted free agent

Hefty penalties from the league if they are imposed. Stripping the Clippers’ draft picks will hamper the franchise’s immediate future. Banning Steve Ballmer will have little to no effect, though. He’s still the owner at the end of the day.
But invalidating Kawhi Leonard’s contract would become a major fiasco. Does that mean that he’s free to sign with another team as an unrestricted free agent? Many franchises will surely line up for his services.
With the second half of the season already underway, it’s unclear when the league will decide on what to do with Kawhi Leonard and the Clippers in relation to this controversy. When Adam Silver was asked about it, even he had no clue when the investigation would end.
“I haven’t come to any decisions whatsoever yet on the Clippers matter. As you know, the league office is not directly running the investigation. It’s being overseen by a law firm, Wachtel, in New York. From everything I’ve been told, the Clippers have been fully cooperative. But as I said, I’m not involved day-to-day in the investigation,” Silver said.
It’s quite understandable if Silver does not want to jump to conclusions. He wants it to be fair. But fans are growing impatient regarding this issue. They want answers as soon as possible.
