The trade deadline arrives on Thursday, and despite no confirmation from the Milwaukee Bucks over their intentions with superstar center Giannis Antetokounmpo, he remains one of the most-talked-about potential trade targets. The Miami Heat are on top of the rumor list, which led to young center Kel'el Ware getting dragged into the mix in the hunt for the Bucks superstar.
Known for his strong double-double performances during his college stints with both the Indiana Hoosiers and Oregon Ducks, he's developing as a stretch five who also comes in handy on the defensive end.
Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel asked Ware about the chatter around his potential role if the Heat were to pursue Antetokounmpo. Ware replied in a manner that the Heat would probably appreciate coming from a young potential star.
"I mean, of course I’ve seen it. My people have told me, but at the end of the day, if they make that decision, they make that decision. If not, then I’m just going to continue to go out here and play, regardless. … I mean, wherever I’m at, I’m going to try and play my best basketball," the 21-year-old said.
His take on the matter can be perceived as a win-win for the Heat and the Bucks or any other team playing the roulette of the Antetokounmpo trade. It shows maturity, perseverance and an attitude that focuses on his skills and development rather than how he's valued or not valued at a personal level.
After having a decent rookie season, which somewhat proved that he's capable of translating his size and talent into on-court success, Ware has had a productive second season. He has put up 11.3 points and 9.3 rebounds, shooting at a rate of 53.9% from the field.
He also had an eight-game stretch from Nov. 10-24 during which he averaged 15.9 points and 15.1 rebounds, along with 1.5 blocks. With Bam Adebayo almost cemented as the starter and a star for the Heat, Ware does not get to start every game. But he has been able to really find his footing in the league. And if he continues to maintain this attitude along with the on-court production, any team would gladly accept him with open arms.
The Heat (26-24, eighth in Eastern Conference) host the Chicago Bulls at 6 p.m. ET Sunday.
