The end of 2023 was a great time for the Philadelphia 76ers, with the sky seemingly being the limit, as they managed to win ten games over some big teams such as the Western Conference leading Minnesota Timberwolves, amongst others, while only sprinkling four losses throughout December.
This momentum hasn't exactly carried over to the new year as the Sixers have only managed to pick up one win out of their first three matches in January.
Perhaps the real blow to the momentum isn't due to the fact that they lost, rather in the fashion that they dropped their game against the New York Knicks being a shining example.
Philadelphia suffered a 36-point blowout, their largest defeat of the season, to New York, thanks in part to a huge 29-point showing from Jalen Brunson, with the former Villanova guard shooting with a lethal 55 percent from the field.
While not as brutal as their loss to the Knicks, the Sixers fell to the Utah Jazz on Saturday night, as Lauri Markkanen erupted for a 33-point, 13-rebound double-double, which muffled the 25-point performance from Tyrese Maxey.
Following their loss, Kelly Oubre Jr talked about Philadelphia's recent struggles on the court, explaining that while everyone has off days, it can't happen two games in a row.
"I don't think we've been ourselves these past two games, it's obviously shown in the results," stated Oubre. "We're human beings, everybody has off days and things like that, but it's definitely unacceptable to lose two in a row..."
The image issue that Oubre mentions might go just beyond the run of recent results as the Sixers have been bit by the injury bug, as De'Anthony Melton, Tobias Harris, and Joel Embiid all sat out of their loss against the Jazz.
For Melton, it was his third consecutive game on the bench, as the 25-year-old suffered from soreness in his lower spine, while Embiid returned to the sidelines after a short-lived return to the court following his injury stint at the end of December.
Harris' night against the Knicks ended early as he left at the beginning of the fourth quarter due to an ankle injury, something that irked the veteran guard on Saturday morning prior to his team's match, hence his appearance on the bench against Utah.
Following their loss on Saturday, the Sixers have a three-day break, which Oubre imagines will be spent in the gym correcting their mistakes in an effort to get them back to how they were playing in December.
"We definitely need a day off, we definitely need to get into the gym and get better, fix the ship, and get it right," said Oubre.
