Now, don’t misunderstand. Former NBA forward Kenyon Martin suggested he respects Golden State Warriors frontcourt star Draymond Green.
You just wouldn’t know it based on what Martin had to say.
Martin, of course, was a starting forward for the then-New Jersey Nets teams of 20-plus years ago that reached the NBA Finals twice, with Jason Kidd at point guard, Richard Jefferson at another forward spot, and Byron Scott as coach. So he’s played at a pretty high level himself.
Anyway, Martin was a recent guest on Gilbert Arenas‘ podcast when the topic of Green (a famous podcaster himself) came up.
“I can list 200 people that’s better than Draymond Green at basketball right now … Championships aside,” Martin said. “We’re talking about going out and playing basketball.”
For the record, Martin was debating the top 10 players of the 2010s with Arenas, ex-NBA guard Nick Young, and co-host Josiah Johnson.
“I’m not taking nothing from him,” Martin said of Green. “He did what he did, absolutely. I’m with it. I ain’t ever say nothing bad about Draymond Green, but I just want to know is he a better basketball player than (players like Al Jefferson and Elton Brand)?”
Green, 35, has won four championships with the Warriors. He was also the 2016-17 Defensive Player of the Year, came close to winning the award this season, and has been named to the All-Defensive team nine times, as well as to two All-NBA teams.
He has yet to respond to Martin, but if there’s one thing we can count on, it’s that Green most certainly will.
