In the summer of 2019, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving made headlines by signing with the Brooklyn Nets, bypassing the New York Knicks. The move was seen as a significant shift in the NBA landscape, with the Nets eventually assembling a formidable trio that included James Harden.

However, despite high expectations, the Nets' tenure with these stars was marred by injuries, off-court controversies, and early playoff exits. The team managed only one playoff series win during this period before entering a rebuilding phase.

Conversely, the Knicks, after years of underperformance, began a resurgence. By 2025, they had advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in 25 years, led by players like Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle.

This turnaround was attributed to strategic team building, contrasting with the Nets' approach during Durant and Irving's tenure. On Sunday, Anthony Puccio of Nets Daily name-dropped Durant when speaking about the Knicks.

"The best thing that ever happened for the Knicks was KD and Kyrie choosing Brooklyn," he wrote. "It took time, but they were forced to restructure and build out organically."

Durant, as he so often does, responded on X.

"I don’t think the Knicks' success has anything to do with me or Kyrie," he said. "An organic NBA team, what does that even mean in professional sports?"

This exchange reignited discussions among fans, with Durant going back-and-forth with several different posts. This included one that called out his decision to join the Golden State Warriors in 2016, while subsequently accusing him of leaving Steph Curry for Brooklyn to build his own legacy.

"I just don’t look at my career from your perspective, maybe he was right, may I do have athlete delusion because I think my career is legendary," Durant responded. "lol maybe u have fan delusion tho.. but like I said, this is YOUR experience, my career can mean something different to you."

With the Knicks continuing their playoff run and the Nets in rebuild mode, the contrasting outcomes of Durant's decision remain a topic of discussion among fans and analysts alike. Additionally, his Golden State tenure remains in the spotlight, particularly how Curry's superstardom impacted the overall perception of Durant and his impact.
