Kevin Durant to the Rockets? It’s Official—and It’s Huge

Well, it happened. After a rocky season in Phoenix, Kevin Durant is moving again. This time to the Houston Rockets in a blockbuster deal that could shift the balance in the Western Conference.

The Houston Rockets reportedly acquired Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns in a blockbuster deal. In return, the Suns will receive Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, and five future second-round picks. It’s a significant haul for Phoenix, but make no mistake—this is a bold, win-now move for the Rockets.

Durant Leaves a Messy Situation in Phoenix

Things never quite worked in Phoenix. Despite having Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, the Suns finished a disappointing 36–46 last season and missed the playoffs. The vibes were off, the depth wasn’t there, and the team let go of head coach Mike Budenholzer just a year in.

Durant still put up strong numbers—26.2 points, 6.0 boards, 4.2 assists—but at 36, he’s not looking to be part of a rebuild. And that’s exactly where the Suns seem headed now.

Houston Goes All-In

The Rockets just wrapped up their first winning season since 2020, going 52–30 and showing real promise under head coach Ime Udoka. This move says: they’re done waiting.

Adding Durant gives them a proven star to pair with a strong young core. They’ve got Alperen Şengün, Amen Thompson, Cam Whitmore, and solid vets like Fred VanVleet—now they add one of the best scorers in NBA history.

Durant might not be the same KD from his Warriors days, but he’s still elite—and with the right support, he could help Houston make some real noise.

Suns Get Younger, Deeper—and Look Ahead

For Phoenix, this is about the future. Jalen Green has been up and down since being drafted second overall in 2021, but he’s still only 23 and has averaged over 21 points per game across his first three seasons. If he can take another step, the Suns might have something.

Dillon Brooks brings defense, toughness, and… some drama. He put up 14 points a game last year and gives the Suns a bit of an edge. Add in the No. 10 pick in this year’s draft and five second-rounders, and Phoenix now has some room to reshape its roster—and maybe even reset its identity.

What This Means Going Forward

For the Rockets, the time is now. The roster’s deeper, more balanced, and now has one of the league’s biggest names in the mix. It’s not championship-or-bust quite yet, but expectations just shot up.

For the Suns, it’s back to the drawing board—but not in a bad way. They’ve offloaded a huge contract, added young talent, and gained draft capital. They’ve got some big decisions ahead, including who steps in as head coach, but they’ve started the offseason by ripping off the biggest band-aid.
