After another disappointing campaign, the Phoenix Suns could undergo some major changes this offseason. Phoenix went 49-33 in 2023-24 and ended as the No. 6 seed before getting swept by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the playoffs. This year, they were 36-46 and missed the postseason completely.
The Suns have already fired head coach Mike Budenholzer after one year, but many other changes could be coming to the organization. One of those big changes could involve star Kevin Durant, who just wrapped up his second full season in Phoenix.
On Wednesday, a new report surfaced regarding a potential Durant trade that could change the landscape of the league.
For months, the Texas alum has been the subject of many trade rumors. This includes rumors ahead of February’s trade deadline, where the Golden State Warriors were reportedly interested in a reunion with the two-time NBA Finals MVP. However, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer, a trade involving Durant is not a guarantee.
According to Fischer (subscription required), a return to Phoenix is still an option for Durant, despite the rumors.
"It has been widely anticipated that Durant, who turns 37 in September, will be back on the trade market this summer in the wake of the Suns' myriad trade explorations involving No. 35 leading up to February's in-season trade deadline," Fischer wrote. "A return to the desert next season, though, has not been fully ruled out."
There are plenty of teams that have been linked to Durant, and this includes the Memphis Grizzlies. In February, former Golden State Warriors executive Bob Myers said that the Grizzlies pursued Durant ahead of the trade deadline, though no deal came to fruition.
If the Suns explore trades for the 15-time All-Star, it is safe to assume the Grizzlies will be a top suitor. However, based on the latest reports, it is also possible that Phoenix keeps Durant around, meaning that Memphis may have to pivot in the offseason.
