It appears several players are following in Victor Wembanyama’s footsteps and reaching out to NBA legends like Kevin Garnett.
Victor Wembanyama has been a breath of fresh air for the NBA since arriving in 2023. While his size and playstyle make him an anomaly and an evolution of the modern playing style, the same can’t be said for his mentality.
Wembanyama is a bit of a throwback in terms of his approach to basketball, and trying to get better every year.
This summer, we saw a great example of that, as Wembanyama reached out to Hakeem Olajuwon and Kevin Garnett.
We’ve seen players like LeBron James reach out to Olajuwon and other legends in the past. And it appears Wemby has brought this trend back.
Kevin Garnett was a guest commentator for New Orleans Pelicans’ overseas preseason game against the South East Melbourne Phoenix in Australia.
Garnett revealed that he’s been getting more phone calls from young players in the NBA to help them out with their mentality, as well as their physical skills.
He then went off on a tangent about young players of today’s generation not having the mental wherewithal that players from his era did.
“I got a couple of calls this summer from a couple of guys to come in and just help out. A lot of these young kids are having problems with their mindset…
“It takes some discipline and consistency, and I don’t know if any of these young players today have been taught that. If young guys don’t want to do something, they just quit.
“Man, in our day, you had a coach on your behind telling you A, B, and C and you had to finish your workouts.
“Those workouts were an hour, 45 minutes. Today’s workouts are just 20 minutes because the kids can’t consume (information) like they used to.”

It’s hard to understand why Kevin Garnett used players reaching out to him as a way to call out the current generation.
This serves as yet another example of players from the past discrediting the current era of stars. And the worst part is, he’s wrong in what he’s saying.
Now more than ever, we’ve seen NBA players go through the ringer physically, not just during games, but in training as well.
The rise in Achilles injuries in the NBA might be a result of this

In fact, Eddie Johnson slammed modern NBA trainers for overworking players during the offseason. And that isn’t the only bit of evidence.
We’re seeing NBA players sustain brutal injuries more often than ever. Last season saw many NBA stars suffer Achilles injuries in the span of months.
Hopefully, players and teams can figure out a way to handle the grueling nature of the NBA schedule and playstyle.
