Kings Earn Harsh Regular Season Grade After Underwhelming Season

It was an interesting regular season for the Sacramento Kings and they were able to overcome a ton of changes to clinch a Play-In spot in the Western Conference.

Of course, Sacramento had high expectations after adding DeMar DeRozan to their roster in the offseason to pair alongside De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis.

The Kings then got off to a terrible start which resulted in them firing head coach Mike Brown in late December and replacing him with Doug Christie.

Sacramento then went on a torrid run under Christie before things cooled down ahead around the trade deadline as they sent Fox to the San Antonio Spurs in the same deal that landed the Kings Zach LaVine from the Chicago Bulls.

With their new big three, the Kings were inconsistent down the stretch but were still able to hold onto the ninth seed in the West standings as they finished the season with a 40-42 record.

Because of their underwhelming season, the Kings earn a D regular season grade as they failed to live up to their expectations entering the season.

Despite the low grade, it was still impressive for the Kings to be able to overcome multiple massive changes to their organization and still clinch a spot in the Play-In instead of just giving up midway through the year.

Sacramento will now face off against the Dallas Mavericks in the Play-In to try and keep their season alive and if they are unable to do so, more changes may be coming in the offseason.

With the Kings’ disappointing season, they may look to begin a rebuild in the offseason which could see them trade away Sabonis and DeRozan.

Despite this, Sacramento still has a shot to make the playoffs as the eighth seed if they can take care of business in the Play-In.

The Kings begin their postseason on Wednesday when they face the Mavericks in the first round of the Play-In in a win-or-go-home matchup.
