The Kings are weighing a move for veteran big man Precious Achiuwa, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer.
And if a deal gets done, Isaac Jones will likely be the roster casualty, per ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel.
Sacramento is 2-4 and has been playing smaller, with DeMar DeRozan spending plenty of time at the four. They are thin up front overall and even thinner right now with Keegan Murray out with a thumb injury.
Outside of Domantas Sabonis, the Kings do not have a big man producing meaningful offense. That is likely the context behind kicking the tires on Achiuwa.
The Kings have a full roster. If they sign Achiuwa they have to waive someone, and Jones appears to be the name most likely to go.
Achiuwa, 26, was waived late in Heat training camp so Miami could dodge the luxury tax. He averaged 7.6 points and 5.7 rebounds across 320 regular season games with Miami, Toronto and New York. He appeared in 57 games for the Knicks last season, including 10 starts.
Erik Spoelstra said before opening night that cutting Achiuwa was more about the cap sheet than basketball.
“It is tough, especially because we spent time with him four years ago,” Spoelstra said. “But that’s just where we are right now with the roster. We’ll have to see what happens in the future.”
Achiuwa averaged 4.8 points and 5.3 boards in 11.7 minutes per game in the preseason.
