The Sacramento Kings are finalizing a deal to name veteran NBA executive Scott Perry as their next general manager, according to a report from ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Multiple outlets, including The Athletic, Yahoo Sports, Fox 40 Sacramento and TheKingsBeat.com, have since confirmed the report.
Perry’s hiring follows the mutual parting of ways between the Kings and former GM Monte McNair, announced shortly after the team was eliminated from the NBA play-in tournament on Wednesday night.
The Athletic had identified Perry as a leading candidate for the position earlier this week. The move marks a return to Sacramento for the 61-year-old executive, who served briefly as the team’s vice president of basketball operations in 2017 before being hired away by the New York Knicks to serve as their general manager.
Perry’s previous tenure in Sacramento, while brief, reportedly left a positive impression on team owner Vivek Ranadive, a relationship that is believed to have factored into the decision to bring him back.
A Detroit native and former college basketball player, Perry began his NBA career in 2000 with the Pistons. His front office resume includes stints with the SuperSonics, Magic, and a second run in Detroit. He spent six seasons as the Knicks’ GM before departing in 2023.
Despite the Kings having yet to conduct their postseason exit interviews, the organization acted quickly to secure Perry’s services, possibly in part due to reported interest from the New Orleans Pelicans, where he was considered a candidate to join the front office under longtime colleague Joe Dumars.
Perry, who has also served as an NBA analyst for ESPN, was among the reported finalists for the Detroit Pistons’ head of basketball operations job in 2023 before the role went to Trajan Langdon.
Perry most recently has been serving as an analyst on the excellent Hoops Genius podcast, also featuring former NBA guard B.J. Armstrong.
