There’s been a lot of speculation about whether LeBron James is happy with his situation in Los Angeles.
The four-time NBA MVP and arguably the greatest player ever has shown he still has it at age 40, averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game this past season with the Lakers.
James still has the ability to lead a team to a championship, and that remains his main focus. But after the 6-foot-9 forward picked up his $52.6 million player option for next season, comments from his agent, Rich Paul, on Sunday raised some questions.
"LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul told ESPN. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career."
Meanwhile, Sportskeeda’s Mark Medina interviewed two-time NBA champion Mychal Thompson, the father of Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson. The former Laker himself weighed in on James' future, predicting which team he will retire with.
"I expect him to be there the whole season," Thompson told Medina. "I would be shocked if he asks ou or if he is moved. I expect him to retire as a Laker."
Thompson played 12 seasons in the NBA, including five with the Lakers from the 1986-87 season through 1990-91. That stretch fell during the "Showtime" era, and he won both of his championships with the team during that time.
As for James, it’s unclear exactly when he’ll retire, but turning 41 next season suggests it’s not far off.
