Klay Thompson's Father Believes Mavericks Will Lose 10 Games In A Row

Klay Thompson’s father, Mychal Thompson, has made a bleak prediction about the Dallas Mavericks, stating that they are likely to lose 10 straight games as their season spirals out of control. Speaking on ESPN Los Angeles, Mychal explained how Klay believed he had a championship shot when he joined the Mavericks in the offseason, but the team’s rapid collapse has left him in “purgatory.”

"No, not at all. He thought with Luka and Kyrie that they had a chance to get back to the Finals. Obviously, Luka left. Then I told him AD is coming, you still got a chance to get to the Finals ‘cause AD is that good."

"Then he's hurt, and Gafford got hurt, then Lively got hurt. Klay is stuck in purgatory now... I think they’re going to lose 10 in a row."

Klay Thompson’s move to Dallas was supposed to be a major step toward contention. After spending his entire career with the Golden State Warriors, winning four NBA championships, he shocked the league by signing with the Mavericks in the offseason.

The move made perfect sense at the time—Dallas had just reached the NBA Finals, and pairing Klay’s shooting with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving seemed like the perfect formula for another deep playoff run.

Fast forward just a few months, and everything has fallen apart. Luka was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in a blockbuster deal that brought Anthony Davis to Dallas, but now Davis is injured and may be shut down for the rest of the season

Kyrie, who was supposed to be a key part of Dallas’ championship window, suffered a season-ending ACL injury. To make matters worse, Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II have also gone down with injuries, leaving the Mavericks severely shorthanded.

Now sitting at 10th place with 32-31, the Mavericks have lost all momentum. Their latest defeat highlighted just how thin their roster is, and with Davis unlikely to return soon, there’s little hope for a turnaround. Mychal Thompson’s prediction of a 10-game losing streak is not far-fetched, especially given the team’s lack of depth and the brutal upcoming schedule.

With their season effectively over, Dallas now faces a major decision—should they tank the rest of the way and try to land a top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft? The clear prize is Cooper Flagg, a generational talent projected to be the No. 1 pick.

Given the Mavericks still own their first-round pick, intentionally dropping games could increase their chances of securing a top selection. If they slide down to the 6th-8th worst record range, their lottery odds for the No. 1 pick would rise significantly.

For Klay Thompson, this situation must feel like a nightmare. He left the stability of Golden State for what he thought was a championship contender, only to find himself on a sinking ship. If the Mavericks do go on a 10-game losing streak, Mychal Thompson’s words may prove to be more than just an ominous prediction—they might be the reality of Dallas’ harsh new future.
