Klay Thompson's father explains why he snubbed the Lakers

Following a disappointing tenure with the Dallas Mavericks, Klay Thompson signed a two-year deal to join the Miami Heat.

The four-time NBA champion might embrace a Ray Allen-type role as a sharpshooting specialist for Erik Spoelstra alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.

While he's no longer in his prime, multiple teams were interested in his services after his buyout. Unsurprisingly, that list included the Los Angeles Lakers, his hometown team.

However, as much as his father, Mychal Thompson — a former Lakers star — insisted that he should take his talents to Southern California, the idea of playing for Spoelstra was too much to overcome.

Klay Thompson wanted to play for Erik Spoelstra

“Once I knew he was leaving Dallas, I tried to persuade him again to come back to L.A., come home. But playing with Giannis and Bam, and playing for Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra was just too much of an attraction for him to turn down,” Mychal revealed on "Locked on Heat."

Notably, this isn't the first time that Mychal unsuccessfully tried to recruit his son to his beloved Lakers.

They also tried to sign him when he first left the Golden State Warriors. Again, another team offered him a more enticing context.

“The fit for him was here in L.A., and he kind of agreed with me to a certain point, a certain extent, but the lure of playing with Luka and  Kyrie in Dallas won over my advice,” Mychal said.

Thompson would soon find out that the grass wasn't always greener away from California.

Now, however, the Heat seem to be in a strong position to help him with a fifth NBA championship before riding into the sunset, his father's wishes be damned.
