Klay Thompson will begin Year 2 with the Dallas Mavericks during the 2025-26 NBA season.
Following an eventful 2024-25 NBA season, the Dallas Mavericks are firing on all cylinders to bounce back next season.
While most fans are excited about the core of Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, and Cooper Flagg, the Mavericks are also home to a seasoned veteran in Klay Thompson.
Thompson had an inconsistent debut season with the Mavericks after leaving the Golden State Warriors in 2024.
During the Warriors vs Cleveland Cavaliers battles in the NBA Finals during the mid-2010s, Thompson locked horns with Kevin Love a plethora of times.
But fast forward to 2025, and the two former rivals recently worked out together in the offseason. It’s a tradition that goes back 20 years, per Thompson’s latest Instagram post.
“Still at it 20 years later is crazy,” Thompson wrote.
While Love and Thompson have never been teammates in the NBA, the two were once teammates on a Little League baseball team.
On the surface, Thompson seems to be remembering his friendship with Love, but is there a deeper meaning to the picture?
Love’s summer began with getting traded by the Miami Heat. Considering the Heat decided to send K-Love to the Utah Jazz, it’s no surprise that the 2016 NBA champion wants out.
In fact, Love is reportedly finalizing a contract buyout with the Jazz. Since then, many have anticipated Love joining the Los Angeles Lakers to reunite with his former Cavs teammate, LeBron James.
On paper, it sounds like a dream move for Love, who recently turned 37 years old. But so does a move to the Mavericks.
After all, bringing in someone of Love’s pedigree could aid young players like Flagg in developing at a faster rate. Additionally, the veteran’s arrival could certainly cheer up the mood in the locker room.
If Thompson has successfully recruited Love to the Mavs, it will certainly be unfortunate for the Lakers. But hey, the Mavs did decide to trade Luka Doncic to the Lakers out of nowhere.
So, the 17-time NBA champions can’t really complain about the Mavericks stealing one of their rumored targets in the offseason.
