Knicks add Malcolm Brogdon to camp competition

The Knicks are bringing in Malcolm Brogdon, who has agreed to a one-year deal with New York, agent Sam Permut told ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The contract is non-guaranteed, SNY’s Ian Begley confirmed, meaning Brogdon will head into camp competing with Landry Shamet and Garrison Mathews for what’s expected to be one final veteran roster spot.

Because of their second-apron restrictions, the Knicks can only carry one of those three on a veteran minimum unless they move money elsewhere. In other words, it’s a three-man battle for one chair.

Brogdon, 33 in December, has been a steady hand since winning Rookie of the Year in 2017. He’s logged stops in Milwaukee, Indiana, Boston and Portland before finishing last season with Washington.

In limited action with the Wizards, he averaged 12.7 points, 4.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds in 24 games before an ankle sprain shut him down after the All-Star break.

The issue, of course, has always been health. Brogdon owns career marks of 15.3 points and nearly five assists per game on highly efficient shooting, but he’s missed 249 of a possible 637 regular-season contests.

New York is sitting at 12 guaranteed deals and has enough apron space to add one veteran and one rookie minimum.

For now, it’s Brogdon, Shamet and Mathews in the mix. Training camp will decide who survives.
