The New York Knicks are entering the season with expectations of making a deep run in the NBA playoffs. If they are successful in doing so and are able to make it out of the Eastern Conference, it will likely be because of the play of point guard Jalen Brunson.

The 29-year-old has emerged as the face of the franchise since joining the organization in 2022. Brunson is off to a strong start this year over his first 11 games. He has posted 28.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 0.8 steals while shooting 46.7% from the field and 36.9% from three-point range.

However, Brunson's momentum came to a halt during last Wednesday’s 124-107 loss against the Orlando Magic.

With less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter, Brunson twisted his right ankle while driving to the basket. He immediately exited the game and headed to the locker room. Brunson left the arena that night on crutches and in a walking boot, and has since missed two straight games for New York.

Fortunately for the Knicks, Brunson has made significant progress in his recovery over the past six days. Ahead of Monday’s game against the Miami Heat, he was seen participating in pregame shooting drills.

On Tuesday, that optimism turned into reality as the Knicks announced their official injury report and upgraded Brunson’s status to questionable for Wednesday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks (h/t Stefan Bondy of the New York Post).

This is extremely good news for the Knicks, as Brunson’s availability remains crucial to the team’s success. Even if he is unable to play Wednesday, he is clearly trending in the right direction. If he cannot suit up, his next opportunity would come Saturday against the Magic.

Brunson has been the Knicks’ primary scoring option over the past four seasons and has consistently been in the MVP conversation. He has earned two All-Star nods and two All-NBA selections, but his focus remains on bringing an NBA championship back to New York rather than chasing individual accolades.

When Brunson signed his extension with the Knicks in July 2024, he effectively took a pay cut by signing a year early to give the organization more financial flexibility to retain the talented core around him.

That selfless mindset, combined with his elite production, is exactly why the Knicks continue to view him as the heart of their championship pursuit.
