Since firing Tom Thibodeau, the New York Knicks have been making headlines for all the wrong reasons. What first looked like a genuine plan from the front office now appears to be a scattergun approach.
In recent days, the Knicks have reportedly requested permission to speak with approximately five head-coaching candidates. Each respective team has denied that permission.
As such, the Knicks have now tried and failed in pursuit of Jason Kidd, Ime Udoka, Chris Finch, Billy Donovan and now, Quin Snyder of the Atlanta Hawks.
Another one: The New York Knicks have requested permission to speak with Atlanta Hawks head coach Quin Snyder, but were firmly denied, sources tell ESPN.

Throughout Thibodeau's tenure in New York, the franchise was a well-run organization. Every move the team made was guided by a clear plan. The Knicks had a genuine identity and a blueprint for reaching the overall goal.
Unfortunately for the Knicks, it would appear that methodical approach left when Thibodeau did. Not only does the franchise look silly for its current debacle, but it's hurting the team's reputation.
How can we look at the Knicks as a potential champion next season when they can't even plan out a coaching search? Did they think they could easily land a coach who is under contract elsewhere in the NBA?
We're at the point where it's hard to assume the front office has any genuine coaching targets. Even Jay Wright, the former Villanova head coach, has ruled himself out of the running. Therefore, there doesn't seem to be a genuine option available for a franchise that parted ways with a coach who just took the team to the Eastern Conference Finals.
The Knicks came into 2024-25 with high hopes and a bright future. Now, they appear to be reverting to the Knicks of old — a team that makes snap decisions with no foresight into how each choice creates a knock-on effect.
New York needs to take a step back, evaluate its situation and formulate a plan. Otherwise, we shouldn't expect to see any progress from this team next season. If anything, things could go from bad to worse.
