Knicks Facing Ben Simmons Decision After Timberwolves Report

Over a month into the start of free agency, the New York Knicks now have just one roster spot available. While there have been a few names thrown around as the most likely candidate for this final spot, there appear to be two players who stand out the most: Ben Simmons and Landry Shamet.

The Knicks have expressed interest in Simmons throughout the summer. However, according to a recent report from Ian Begley of SNY, the team may be more interested in bringing Shamet, who is a free agent after one season in New York, back into the mix.

“I’m talking about Shamet, because I think there is still mutual interest there. If I’m guessing, I’m guessing it ends up with Shamet getting one of those spots,” Begley said on The Putback.

If the Knicks were to bring the 28-year-old back, this would seemingly rule out the possibility of them landing Simmons. However, a new report has surfaced that suggests the Knicks may have to make a decision soon as the Minnesota Timberwolves have also expressed interest in Shamet (h/t Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic).

“The Wolves have looked into several candidates for the spot, including Malcolm Brogdon, Cam Payne and Landry Shamet, league sources told The Athletic," Krawczynski wrote. "However, all indications are that Bones Hyland is the front-runner to get that final spot, league sources said."

Though New York may have preferred bringing Shamet back, they may have to circle back to the former No. 1 overall pick if they want to fill their final roster spot now that there is a chance he lands in Minnesota.

The Knicks Have a High Ceiling in 2025-26

After making it to the conference finals for the first time since 2000, next season's outlook looks solid for the Knicks. They are considered arguably the best team in a wide-open Eastern Conference, and an NBA Finals appearance seems like a real possibility.

There are some concerns about how New York could look next year, especially after replacing head coach Tom Thibodeau with Mike Brown, and they could go through some rough patches as they navigate this new era. Regardless, they have a lot of potential and should further establish themselves as legitimate title contenders.

Until the start of the season, the Knicks remain a team to monitor in free agency as they look to fill their final roster spot. However, it is fair to assume that they will still be a top team next season, no matter who they sign.
