Knicks need to be wary of a disgruntled roster

The New York Knicks have a deep roster full of young talent. The front office has been stockpiling assets in recent years, waiting for a star player to hit the trade market. In that time, some of the younger players on the team have developed into impactful players at the NBA level. Now, according to a report by The Athletic's Fred Katz, the front office is aware some members of the rotation could become disgruntled.

"There are people inside the Knicks front office who understand that a too-many-guys situation could be brewing, according to league sources," Katz wrote. "Grimes griped about his role to reporters earlier this week. Hart spoke a few games prior about not receiving as many offensive touches as he would like. Quickley is playing only 24 minutes a game in a contract year. DiVincenzo’s playing time is down from last season when he was with the Golden State Warriors."

The Knicks likely didn't envision the wait for a star talent to take this long. Outside of their failed pursuit of Donovan Mitchell, the front office has largely stood pat in major trade discussions. Overall, their decision to be judicious in who they acquire is the right move, but for every year they wait, the players at their disposal are improving and getting closer to the end of their contracts. Immanuel Quickley's impending free agency is a prime example of the risk the Knicks are running

New York needs to consolidate some of its assets into high-level talent. Right now, it appears that Tom Thibodeau's team is reaching its ceiling as a second-round exit in the postseason. Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle are gifted players, but they're not the level of talent that catapults you into postseason contention. It made sense when the Knicks refrained from entering the Damian Lillard bidding war due to Brunson's presence on the roster and Lillard's age in comparison to the Knicks roster, but that won't always be the case.

Nevertheless, the Knicks need to make some moves. They can't continue sitting on their hands and hoping a star player falls into their laps. It's unlikely that a top-20 talent becomes available during the current season, so this summer has to be when they finally step up. Otherwise, everything they've been building toward could begin to crumble. We're already seeing the early signs of how things are going to play out. New York needs to make a trade sooner rather than later.
