Knicks Receive High Free Agency Grade After Two Key Signings

The New York Knicks have had a busy offseason thus far after coming off a season in which they reached the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000.

Of course, the Knicks started their offseason by firing head coach Tom Thibodeau and after about a month of interviews, they officially hired former Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown.

While the Knicks were busy looking to their new head coach, they also made some key moves in free agency.

The first move they made was signing Jordan Clarkson after he was bought out by the Utah Jazz to upgrade their guard depth behind Jalen Brunson.

New York also made a move to sign Guerschon Yabusele after the Philadelphia 76ers let him walk in free agency.

Both of these moves allowed the Knicks to upgrade their second unit, which was an issue last season, at a cheap price.

With these moves, Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz gave the Knicks an A- free agency grade.

“Depth was a major problem for the New York Knicks a season ago. Adding two rotation pieces for less than $8 million was exactly what this team needed to stay under the second apron,” Swartz wrote. “Clarkson's surprising buyout from the Utah Jazz was a blessing for the Knicks, as the 33-year-old is still a big-time offensive threat off the bench. Yabusele became one of the more underrated players in his return to the NBA last season.”

Swartz made a great point about the Knicks being able to sign two key bench players at a cheap price that allowed the franchise to stay under the second apron while also addressing a key area of need entering next season.

With their core of Jalen Brunson Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges back, along with an upgraded bench, New York is looking to take advantage of a weakened East and compete for a championship next season.
