Knicks weighing trades to keep multiple vets from camp group

The Knicks aren’t done tinkering.

Within the past 24 hours, New York reached deals with Malcolm Brogdon, Landry Shamet and Garrison Mathews. Problem is, the Knicks only have enough room below the second apron to keep one of them on the opening night roster.

That’s why, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, people around the league expect the Knicks to shed a little salary to keep Brogdon and one of Shamet or Mathews. The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer added that the front office is actively weighing trade scenarios to create extra cap flexibility.

Names to watch: 2024 first-round pick Pacome Dadiet ($2.85 million) and second-year guard Tyler Kolek ($2.19 million). Neither played much as rookies, and moving one without taking salary back would clear just enough space for New York to keep two vets instead of one.

It’s a tight squeeze, though. Fischer noted that trading Kolek and retaining two veterans would leave the Knicks just $44,000 under their hard cap.

For now, camp will feature Brogdon, Shamet and Mathews all vying for one seat. The Knicks may yet find a way to squeeze in two.
