Kyrie Irving is reportedly set to stay with the Dallas Mavericks. Irving, 33, is a veteran point guard who is coming off one of his best seasons in the NBA. He remains one of the most important players on the Mavericks’ roster. That is perhaps a reason why he isn’t seeking other opportunities like the rumor mill has stated in recent months.
Kyrie Irving is currently recovering from a torn ACL and is expected to miss about half of the 2025-26 NBA season. However, Irving appears to be unbothered by the rumors — and rightfully so. Irving has averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game while leading the Dallas Mavericks after the Luka Doncic trade in February.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Kyrie Irving intends to stay with the Dallas Mavericks. Stein wrote, “To be clear: Absolutely nothing has changed in terms of the long-held anticipation that Irving will be anywhere but Dallas next season. Yet it does remain unclear at this juncture whether Irving will simply activate the option and then try to hammer out an extension with the Mavericks that can be signed starting July 7 … or surrender the option to become an unrestricted free agent.
“Passing on the option, of course, would suggest that the sides are headed for a new deal in free agency, with Dallas anticipated for some time to try to re-sign the 33-year-old to a new three-year pact in the general vicinity of his original three-year, $120 million deal with the Mavericks.”
As he enters the final season of a three-year, $120 million contract, Irving must decide whether to accept or decline a player option worth about $43 million.
Kyrie Irving has openly voiced his love of Dallas, Texas, but the rumor mill has been persistent about Irving looking to decline his player option and join another team in free agency. The rumors started following concerns surrounding the Dallas Mavericks’ long-term future, but Irving is reportedly committed to remaining with the Mavericks for at least one more season. Perhaps a long-term contract can be signed this offseason. But, for now, Irving must make an official decision on June 24.
