The Cleveland Cavaliers were one of the best teams during the middle of the 2010s. Because LeBron James returned to the team that drafted him, they immediately became title contenders. James was a year off from winning back-to-back championships with the Miami Heat at that time. He still had momentum, which is how he transformed the Cavaliers franchise.
Additionally, he teamed up with a young Kyrie Irving as the second option for the team. Lastly, All-Star big man Kevin Love was at the prime of being a double-double machine. In 2016, that recipe was sufficient to propel them to a championship.
However, the Cavaliers faced the Golden State Warriors in 2017. After losing in 2016 despite winning 73 games, Golden State had a new team after adding Kevin Durant. With Durant, it was almost impossible to beat the Warriors, which led to Irving leaving Cleveland and playing for the Boston Celtics.
It was one of the biggest “What Ifs” in the NBA. “What if Irving stayed in Cleveland?”
This question will remain a mystery to most fans. Interestingly, former Cleveland Cavaliers center Kendrick Perkins had an interesting take on the dynamic of James and Irving.
“He idolized and looked up to Kob [Bryant] so much that he actually wouldn’t give Bron a chance to be like that big brother figure, even when y’all won it,” Perkins said. “I wasn’t there, but I’m just keeping it real. Kyrie never really looked at Bron as that big brother. Kob was that big brother to Kyrie.
“I was like, damn, they tripping. They could have ran off a few more, but he was tired of being under the shadows. Bron could never really get that arm around Kyrie, ’cause Kyrie really didn’t allow him to in my opinion.”
The Cleveland Cavaliers attempted to bolster their squad’s offensive capabilities when the Warriors acquired Durant. The player they targeted was Paul George, according to former head coach Ty Lue. He appeared in the recent episode of “Club Shay Shay,” where he revealed their attempt to trade for George.
“Yeah, when he was in Indiana,” Lue revealed. “We tried to get him… We tried.”

The host, former NFL star Shannon Sharpe, said that potentially adding George to Cleveland would’ve been enough to beat the Warriors.
