Just minutes after the Lakers’ pending acquisition of Walker Kessler was reported, they made another significant frontcourt addition.
The Lakers have agreed to a four-year, $52 contract with big man Sandro Mamukelashvili, ESPN’s Shams Charania tweets. The contract includes a player option for the fourth season and is fully guaranteed.
It’s an enormous jackpot for a player who made $2,461,463 with the Raptors this past season. He declined a $2.8MM option on his 2026/27 contract with Toronto in order to become a free agent.
The Lakers will likely use their ample cap room to sign him, Yossi Gozlan of ThirdApron.com tweets.
The 27-year-old Mamukelashvili picked a good time to have a breakout season. He appeared in 80 games (13 starts) and averaged 11.2 points and 4.9 rebounds in 21.9 minutes per night while shooting 52.3% from the field and 38.9% from three-point range. The performance earned him a spot on a few Sixth Man of the Year ballots.
Los Angeles used up most of its draft capital to work out a sign-and-trade with Utah for Kessler, who will jump into the lineup as the team’s starting center.
According to TSN Sports’ Josh Lewenberg (Twitter link), Mamukelashvili wanted to stay in Toronto. However, the Lakers’ offer blew the Raptors out of the water, particularly in light of the assets they gave up in the agreed-upon Kawhi Leonard trade.
Mamukelashvili could slot into the starting power forward spot vacated by LeBron James, who informed the Lakers that he would sign with another team in free agency. Mamukelashvili could also see some minutes at the 5 spot behind Kessler.
