Bronny James continues to navigate a developmental role in his second season with the Los Angeles Lakers, showing gradual progress despite limited opportunities at the NBA level.
Through 31 appearances during the 2025-26 season, the 21-year-old guard has averaged 2.1 points, 1.2 assists, and 0.5 rebounds per game while shooting 39.7% from the field and 41.4% from three-point range in limited minutes. He has played more games compared to his rookie season in 2024-25, when he averaged 2.3 points, 0.7 rebounds, and 0.8 assists across 27 games while adjusting to the pace of the NBA.
Even with the limited role, James has delivered a few flashes this year, including a season-high 12-point performance against the San Antonio Spurs that showcased improved scoring confidence and playmaking ability. Those moments have reinforced the Lakers’ belief that he can grow into a dependable contributor.
However, minutes have been difficult to find in head coach JJ Redick’s rotation. The Lakers feature a crowded backcourt led by Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, leaving little room for young guards to consistently break into the lineup.
As a result, James has frequently shuffled between the Lakers and their G League affiliate throughout the season as the organization balances development with NBA experience.
That pattern continued ahead of the Lakers’ next game on Sunday against the New York Knicks. On Saturday, the team announced that James and forward Adou Thiero have been assigned to the South Bay Lakers, giving both players an opportunity for extended minutes in the G League as Los Angeles prepares to host the Knicks.

James has been productive during his time in the 2025-26 G League season, averaging 15.3 points, 3.7 assists, and 1.6 steals in nine games while handling a significantly larger offensive role.
Meanwhile, the Lakers enter Sunday’s matchup sitting sixth in the Western Conference with a 38-25 record, just 1.5 games behind the third-place Houston Rockets.
Los Angeles will host the Knicks at 3:30 p.m. ET, with the game set to be broadcast nationally on ABC and ESPN+.
