Los Angeles Lakers guard Bronny James is set to begin his second NBA season after being drafted No. 55 overall out of USC in 2024. Making his professional debut alongside his father LeBron James on opening night last year, the 6-foot-2 guard ended up appearing in 27 games for the Lakers in his rookie campaign.

While his scoring average of 2.3 points in 6.7 minutes per game last season wasn't overly impressive, James performed well in 18 G League contests with the South Bay Lakers. Averaging 18.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists for South Bay, James also converted on 41.5% of his field goal attempts (via G League stats) — which was a big increase from his 31.3% mark at the NBA level.

James appeared in four preseason games for the Lakers ahead of the 2025-26 season, averaging 6.8 points in 21.3 minutes per contest. He missed LA's last two preseason games with an ankle sprain suffered against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday.

Ahead of their regular season opener against the Golden State Warriors, the Lakers announced that James had been removed from the injury report and would be available to play. His father, LeBron James, will start the season sidelined with right sciatica.

"The Lakers list LeBron James and Adou Thiero as out tomorrow vs. Golden State," Jovan Buha of The Athletic wrote on X. "Maxi Kleber is questionable. Bronny James isn’t listed."

James does not project to be in JJ Redick's regular rotation to begin the season, but he is available as backcourt depth until the G League season gets underway, which is when the Lakers will be faced with a decision. The South Bay Lakers do not begin their season until Nov. 7, so James will most likely remain with the NBA team until then.

Last season the Lakers chose to have James play primarily in G League home games at UCLA Health Training Center in El Segundo. He did make six road appearances between the regular season and Tip-Off Tournament, but most of his G League action came at home.

Speaking with reporters last week, Redick referred to James' ankle injury as "a little bit" of a sprain (via Lakers PR). It ended up costing him two preseason games, but the team has since announced he has been cleared and will be active for Tuesday night's contest at Crypto.com Arena against Golden State.
