Lakers Announce Troubling Marcus Smart Update on Friday

The Los Angeles Lakers have gotten off to a strong start in the 2025–26 season, riding the momentum of a five-game winning streak. A major factor in that success has been their offseason additions, notably veteran guard Marcus Smart.

The 31-year-old former Defensive Player of the Year has proven invaluable, stepping into the starting lineup early in the season when LeBron James was sidelined with injury and later transitioning into a key role off the bench.

Smart’s impact has been felt most on the defensive end, where his intensity and instincts have helped elevate the Lakers’ overall performance. In 14 games, he has averaged 9.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.8 steals while shooting 40.8% from the field and an impressive 93.8% from the free-throw line.

Ahead of Friday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks, Smart appeared on the injury report with a questionable designation due to back spasms. The Lakers were finally nearing full strength, especially with center Deandre Ayton upgraded to available for the matchup.

However, Los Angeles later announced an update on Friday, officially downgrading Smart from questionable to doubtful (h/t Dave McMenamin of ESPN). This suggests his discomfort will likely prevent him from suiting up.

Much of Smart’s value extends beyond the box score. His presence as a vocal leader and defensive anchor has set the tone for the team, providing the kind of edge that has been crucial to the Lakers’ early surge. If his back injury forces him to miss time, forward Jared Vanderbilt would likely see an expanded role as a defensive specialist off the bench.

Smart’s ability to impact winning has never been in doubt across his 12-year career. A three-time All-Defensive selection, he has consistently contributed to some of the league’s strongest contenders. Availability, however, has limited his success in recent seasons. He appeared in just 54 games combined over the past two years before joining the Lakers.

Smart signed a two-year, $11 million contract in the offseason after being bought out by the Washington Wizards, and Los Angeles is banking on his health to maximize the value of that deal. His status will continue to be closely monitored.
