The Los Angeles Lakers made their first major front-office move of the offseason, hiring Rohan Ramadas as assistant general manager under Rob Pelinka as the franchise continues reshaping its basketball operations structure.

Ramadas arrives after serving as vice president of strategy and operations for the New Orleans Pelicans, where he developed a reputation as an analytics-driven executive with a unique background outside of basketball.

A Different Path to the NBA

Unlike many front-office executives who rose through scouting or coaching ranks, Ramadas spent more than a decade at The Aerospace Corporation after graduating from the University of Southern California before transitioning into the NBA.

A source familiar with his work described him as a “literal rocket scientist,” highlighting the unconventional path that led him into league front offices.

During his time in New Orleans, Ramadas reportedly implemented artificial intelligence systems and created coded analytical models designed to help with decision-making processes. His responsibilities with the Lakers are expected to focus heavily on salary cap management, analytics, and organizational strategy.

Pelinka recently indicated that the franchise wanted to strengthen its operation in those specific areas.

“More on the strategy side,” Pelinka said when discussing the role. “Cap, analytics and data.”

Lakers Continue Organizational Restructuring

Ramadas appears to be only the beginning of broader changes inside the organization.

The Lakers have interviewed multiple candidates in recent weeks and still plan to add another assistant general manager focused on player evaluation. That role is expected to oversee professional scouting, draft scouting, and player development efforts.

The move continues a larger organizational shift under ownership led by Mark Walter, who also owns the Los Angeles Dodgers. Walter’s Dodgers have built a reputation around investing heavily in infrastructure, player development, analytics, and long-term organizational depth.

Bigger Offseason Decisions Still Ahead

The front-office additions come at a critical time for Los Angeles. The Lakers are entering an important summer after posting back-to-back 50-win seasons.

They currently hold the No. 25 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft and face major roster questions, including the futures of LeBron James and Austin Reaves.

While the roster picture remains uncertain, the franchise’s internal structure is beginning to take shape. The Ramadas hire suggests the Lakers are placing a greater emphasis on modern team-building tools and analytical resources as they prepare for their next phase.
