Free agent guard Collin Sexton has agreed to terms with the Lakers on a two-year, $19MM deal, sources tell ESPN’s Shams Charania ( Twitter link). The contract includes a player option for the second season, Charania adds (Twitter link).
L.A. will bring in Sexton using its room exception, which could push the final value of the deal up to $19.2MM.
Sexton figures to be another valuable bench weapon for the Lakers, who have revamped their roster this afternoon by working out a trade with Utah for Walker Kessler and reaching agreements with former Philadelphia guard Quentin Grimes and ex-Toronto center Sandro Mamukelashvili. L.A. now has a much younger collection of talent to replace LeBron James and Marcus Smart, who are both leaving in free agency.
The 27-year-old Sexton was a valuable contributor with Charlotte this season before being traded to Chicago at the deadline. He put up even better numbers with the Bulls, averaging 17.5 PPG in 26 games while shooting 48.2% from the field and 41% from three-point range. Sexton is a 39% shooter for his career from long distance, which will be a welcome addition in L.A.
The Lakers have “exhausted all their spending power” with today’s flurry of moves, according to Yossi Gozlan of The Third Apron (Twitter link). However, the team still has the option to increase its payroll through trades.
