The Los Angeles Lakers managed to keep their first-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. While it was initially slated to go to the New Orleans Pelicans as part of the Anthony Davis trade, the Pelicans opted to convey the selection to next year.
This leaves the Lakers with the No. 17 pick in the first round and the No. 55 selection in Round 2. Even with Rob Pelinka and Co. now sitting near the middle of Round 1, the initial expectation was the team could move that selection to add an experienced piece around Anthony Davis and (hopefully) LeBron James, assuming he remains in Los Angeles.
However, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, it sounds like the Lakers are considering going in a different direction, as Lakers Nation detailed.
It's an interesting situation for numerous reasons. The first is that the likelihood the Lakers add a player anywhere outside of the top 10 who steps in to make an impact next season appears fairly unlikely. This could signal that Pelinka and Co. are high on one or two prospects who they could drop to the latter part of the lottery.
And then there's the great Bronny James debate.
The level of interest the Lakers have in adding Bronny, the son of LeBron James, at No. 17 remains an unknown. But the former USC guard has already worked out for the Lakers, and it's hard to envision a scenario where they're on the clock and opt to pass on James should he be available.
There's no shortage of question marks surrounding the Lakers heading into the offseason, but how they handle the NBA Draft will be worth monitoring.
