Lakers Cut Ties With Big Man After Drew Timme News

The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the hottest teams in the NBA, as their latest 108-106 win over the Utah Jazz marked their fourth straight win and their eighth in the last 10 games.

Sitting at 12-4 on the season, which is tied for the second-best conference record in the Western Conference, things may be getting even better for the Lakers. With Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves both off to explosive starts as they are averaging 34.5 and 27.6 points respectively, the team added more star power last week as four-time NBA MVP LeBron James made his season debut.

However, even with the strong start to the year from their guards, the Lakers have left more to be desired in the paint, which became evident with Monday's sequence of moves.

Outside of Deandre Ayton, who left Sunday's win against the Jazz with a knee injury, the Lakers don't have a true center that they consistently rely upon. As revealed on Monday by ESPN's Shams Charania, they have dipped into the G League to provide their front court with a boost.

"The Los Angeles Lakers are signing center Drew Timme to a two-way NBA deal from their South Bay team, agents Deddrick Faison and Rich Gray tell ESPN," wrote Charania. "Timme played for the Nets to finish last season and then joined Lakers' G League, averaging 25.5 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists."

However, with the Lakers adding Timme, Charania also confirmed that the team waived Christian Koloko, who has played just 6 total minutes across two games this season.

It's unclear when Timme will debut with the Lakers, but the former two-time WCC Player of the Year at Gonzaga has had plenty of success in the G League. His explosive numbers with the South Bay Lakers are actually slight improvements compared to his time with the Long Island Nets last season, where he averaged 23.9 points and 10.3 rebounds.

Timme played in nine games with the Brooklyn Nets last season, averaging 12.1 points and 7.2 rebounds, and may have a chance to carve out a bigger role with the Lakers moving forward. The Lakers will host the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday in a game that tips at 11:00 p.m. ET on NBC/Peacock.
