Lakers HC Darvin Ham makes eye-opening challenge to Anthony Davis

That's a lot of three-pointers to be jacking up — especially for a player who has made only 30 percent from downtown for his career. 

Over the past two seasons, Davis was even worse, making 18.6% of his three-point attempts in 2021-22 and 25.7% in 2022-23. He has never topped 34% from deep in a season in the NBA.

"I'm a fan of Darvin Ham," ESPN's Stephen A. Smith said Wednesday on "First Take." "[But Anthony Davis] has the 12th-worst three-point percentage in NBA history. Why are you encouraging him to shoot more threes?"

For context, Phoenix's Kevin Durant averaged 4.9 attempts and New York Knick Jalen Brunson averaged only 4.7 three-point attempts per game last season. Both, however, shot better than 40 percent from deep.

Davis has worked on becoming more consistent from long distance, said Ham, who added he doesn't want his star to overthink the shot.

"We've all encouraged him to put it up," Ham said.

It's clear the Lakers must become a better three-point shooting team. Since winning the championship in 2020, they've finished in the bottom 10 in three-point percentage for three consecutive seasons — 25th last season (34.6 percent), 22nd in 2021-22 (34.7 percent) and 21st in 2020-21 (35.4 percent).

Davis hasn't shown he can be adept from downtown. Ham's heart may be in the right place, but this effort must be deep-sixed.
