The Los Angeles Lakers made their first major move of free agency Monday. The team reached a two-year, $12 million deal with forward Jake LaRavia.
This signing uses part of the Lakers’ midlevel exception, previously freed by Dorian Finney-Smith’s exit. While not a blockbuster addition, LaRavia brings youth, versatility and room to grow.
LaRavia showed steady improvement during last season’s stint with Sacramento. The 23-year-old forward averaged 6.9 points and nearly four rebounds per contest. He also displayed a reliable shooting touch from three-point range and midcourt spots. At 6-foot-8, his defensive awareness and rebounding instincts make him a useful rotation piece.
His offensive output climbed late in the year with increased playing time. LaRavia played 66 total games between Sacramento and Memphis last season. The Lakers are hoping his upside translates into meaningful minutes off the bench. He fits their model of athletic, two-way players who can stretch the floor.
L.A. originally wanted to keep Finney-Smith, but the price tag was high. He landed a four-year deal with Houston, opening the Lakers’ financial flexibility. That allowed Rob Pelinka to pursue alternatives like LaRavia, who was still available. His deal was made possible by the team’s full access to the midlevel exception.
Finney-Smith played a key defensive role during his short Lakers stint. However, his ankle issues and long-term cost changed L.A.’s offseason priorities. The Lakers chose to pivot quickly, locking in a cheaper, younger wing. This keeps future cap space intact while adding depth at a critical position.
LaRavia may not headline free agency, but his skill set fits the roster well. He’s young, improving, and motivated to make an impact in Los Angeles. He also made it clear he’s ready for the challenge ahead. “Let’s work,” LaRavia posted on Instagram, welcoming the opportunity with excitement.
The Lakers are expected to remain active in reshaping the roster this summer. Signing LaRavia was a calculated, low-risk move to strengthen the wing. More additions could follow as the front office targets veteran help. But for now, this move adds flexibility and potential to a team aiming for another title run.
