LeBron James made his NBA debut in 2003, when the league looked completely different. Twenty-three seasons later, he's still playing and still chasing records at 41 years old.
That alone says everything about what the Los Angeles Lakers star has meant to professional basketball. Now deep into the 2026 playoffs, James is closing in on another milestone that puts him in rare company.
The Lakers hold a 3-0 series lead over the Houston Rockets heading into Game 4 on Sunday and one more win does more than advance Los Angeles to the second round.
According to ESPN, a Lakers victory would give James his 13th career playoff sweep, tying Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most in NBA history. He currently sits at 12, alongside Magic Johnson and Byron Scott. One win separates him from the top spot.
This run has come without Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, which has put even more on James through the first three games. Head coach JJ Redick's group has handled Houston well despite those absences and James has been the constant.
Game 3 told the full story. He played extended minutes through overtime and never looked like a player running out of gas, finishing with 29 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, three steals and a block.
The sequence that stood out most was a key steal that led directly to his game-tying three in regulation. The Houston Rockets have tried different defensive looks and leaned on Amen Thompson to slow him down.
None of it has worked. James has maintained his rhythm throughout and kept the offense structured against a Rockets team that has struggled to apply consistent pressure on the other end.
James passed Kareem's all-time scoring record of 38,387 points back in 2023. More recently he surpassed him for the most career field goals made in NBA history. The playoff sweep record is the latest name on a list that keeps growing.
With Reaves still questionable heading into Game 4, James figures to carry a heavy load again.
At this point that's nothing new. For two decades he has found ways to deliver when it matters most and this postseason has been no different.
