Basketball and rap music go together. Ballers are often known to listen to the genre while rappers tend to reference NBA stars in their verses. Additionally, big names from both industries associate with each other. Take Drake and LeBron James for example. They’re known friends, and they’ve been seen together multiple times at celebrity-related events. In fact, back in 2018, James was even dancing onstage with Drake and Travis Scott as the rappers performed their viral hit, “SICKO MODE.” However, a recent video of the Los Angeles Lakers star may not be a sight that Drake would enjoy watching.

Amid the rapper’s ongoing beef with fellow industry artist Kendrick Lamar, James was seen dancing to Lamar’s new hit, “Not Like Us.” For those unaware, the song is one of Lamar’s recent diss tracks toward Drake. (clip via NFR Podcast)

More context on the Drake-Kendrick Lamar feud

It all started in late March, when Lamar went at Drake and J. Cole on Metro Boomin and Future’s track, “Like That.” After Cole responded with “7 Minute Drill,” he immediately made it known that he wasn’t interested in continuing the beef during a concert.

As for Drake and Lamar, the entire thing went back and forth. Throughout April and early May, the rappers continuously released diss tracks that touched on various topics, even going as far as discussing each other’s families. This was mainly seen in Drake’s “Family Matters” and Lamar’s “Meet the Grahams.”

For anyone interested in listening to all the disses released from each side, below is the list of songs:

From Drake’s end:

  • Push Ups
  • Taylor Made Freestyle
  • Family Matters
  • The Heart Part 6

From Kendrick Lamar’s end:

  • Like That
  • Euphoria
  • 6:16 in LA
  • Meet the Grahams
  • Not Like Us

Going back to basketball and rap music…

Moving back to the topic earlier, rap has been a part of basketball culture for a long time. Watching an NBA game live, one will be hard-pressed to find players warming up without the genre blaring in the background.

The cultural influence has even reached the fans. If one were to watch player mixtapes, amateur or professional, the most common genre used by video editors as background music is rap. And for anyone who’s played in recreational leagues or parks, the music being blasted during games would always be the said genre.

Additionally, many rappers have been known to show their love for the sport in various ways. Look at Snoop Dogg, for example. The decorated artist is not shy about going all out in his support for the Los Angeles Lakers. The same can be said about Drake and the Toronto Raptors. Another big name is Jay-Z, who used to own a stake in the Brooklyn Nets organization. Oh, and of course, there’s the Celebrity All-Star Game. Throughout the past two decades, the number of rap artists who have participated would be too many to enumerate.

Whatever opinion one has on the genre, it’ll always be synonymous with the sport.
