The Lakers made it interesting. They just didn’t make it enough.
Luka Doncic (41 points, eight rebounds, eight assists) was spectacular again and the Lakers finally showed urgency over the final 6:30 on Thursday in Phoenix. Hustle. Physicality. Life.
Problem is, that version showed up late.
Royce O’Neale buried a go-ahead three with 0.9 seconds left. Austin Reaves then missed a clean look from the corner at the buzzer. Final: Suns 113, Lakers 110. Third straight loss for Los Angeles.
And this one stings.
Phoenix was without Devin Booker and Dillon Brooks. The Lakers shot 50 percent from the field — typically a winning formula for them. Instead, they surrendered 15 offensive rebounds and allowed the Suns to launch 50 threes, making 22.
“You have to defend for 24 seconds,” coach JJ Redick told reporters. The Lakers didn’t.

Grayson Allen led Phoenix with 28 points, including 16 in a decisive third quarter. He and Collin Gillespie hit six threes apiece.
The turning point? Ryan Dunn beating everyone down the floor for a transition dunk after contesting a three at the other end. That can’t happen.
The Lakers are now 34-24, clinging to the No. 6 seed in the West and just one game ahead of Phoenix.
Clutch team reputation? Slipping.
Effort late is nice. Effort for 48 is required.
Next up: Golden State.
