Lakers' Luka Doncic Reveals What's Needed to Return to Peak Form

After a challenging start to his tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers, Luka Doncic is optimistic about his path to regaining top form. Despite the Lakers' narrow 100-97 loss to the Charlotte Hornets, Doncic, still shaking off the rust from a six-week layoff due to a calf strain, views every game as a step forward in his recovery.

"Obviously, it's going to take a little time," Doncic acknowledged, discussing his performance where he shot 5 of 18 from the field and 1 of 9 from deep. "Today, a lot of rustiness on my part. Started the game with like four or five turnovers. That can't happen. Just gotta play basketball the right way."

In his third game back, Doncic notched his first double-double as a Laker, scoring 14 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, and dishing out eight assists over 33 minutes—his first game without a minute restriction since his injury. His ability to play extended minutes without apparent issues is a significant positive takeaway for him and the team.

LeBron James, Doncic's new teammate, provided support and perspective on the adjustments required.

"He still doesn't know all the plays, doesn't know all the defensive coverages, all the signals and things that we've built since September. So obviously, we're trying to fast-track it on the fly," James explained. "He's coming back from his injury. He's getting back into form. So we're all working through it together."

Despite the initial hurdles, Doncic remains focused on blending his style with the Lakers' dynamic, emphasizing aggression and adaptability in his approach.

"Just play the way I play," Doncic said. "We're just trying to stay aggressive, do some other things that can help to get a win, but just stay aggressive."

This gradual integration marks a new chapter for Doncic as he transitions from his established role with the Dallas Mavericks to a fresh start in Los Angeles. With each game, he finds more rhythm and remains a critical player for the Lakers, who tweak their strategies to maximize his talents.

The team's optimism grows as Doncic and the Lakers continue to build their on-court relationship. It will take time for Doncic to regain his rhythm after the most extended injury layoff of his career, coupled with playing for a new team.
