Lakers not expected to extend Rui Hachimura before camp

Rui Hachimura is eligible for a contract extension, but the Lakers are not expected to move on one before training camp tips off next month.

That comes from Jovan Buha, who discussed the situation on his latest Buha’s Block podcast.

“With the current intel I have, I do not expect Rui to be extended by the Lakers in the next six weeks,” Buha said. “It’s certainly possible that something happens, but most of what’s been out there is them wanting to keep the books clean and wanting to see whether he starts or whether he’s their sixth man and how the pieces fit this year.”

Hachimura, 27, became eligible for an extension when the NBA’s calendar year turned over on July 6.

He is entering the final season of his deal, worth just over $18.2 million, and would be an unrestricted free agent next summer without a new agreement.

Without a doubt, he’s proven to be a key piece since arriving from Washington in January 2023. He stepped into a full-time starting role last season and produced 13.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 51 percent from the field, 41 percent on threes and 77 percent from the line.

One factor in the decision appears to be the Lakers’ long-term plan. Their front office is determined to preserve cap space for the summer of 2027, when the free agent class could be loaded.

Luka Doncic is currently the only significant player under contract beyond the 2026-27 season, with Jarred Vanderbilt holding a $13.3 million player option that summer.

At some point, the Lakers will need to decide whether keeping Hachimura long term is worth sacrificing that future flexibility. He has been a reliable contributor in L.A., and his role this season may go a long way toward determining where he fits in the big picture.
