Lakers point guard Dennis Schroder likely to test free agency

Los Angeles Lakers point guard Dennis Schroder is unlikely to seek a contract extension and instead intends to test free agency this offseason, as relayed by Dave McMenamin of ESPN.

Schroder indicated he’s leaning to remaining in LA, but wants to keep his options open. He reportedly was involved in trade talks ahead of Thursday’s deadline, but the Lakers instead stood pat.

The Lakers (28-17) have been without injured stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis and have lost four straight. They sat in third place in the Pacific Division entering Friday’s game vs. the Cleveland Cavaliers.

“We’re not trying to just hold on,” Lakers forward/center Montrezl Harrell told the media. “We’re trying to compete, play the right way and win some basketball games. We’re in a tough patch right now. We’ve lost a couple of games, but we’re not going to stop, and we’re going to fight.”

Schroder, 27, is averaging 15.1 points and 4.7 assists in his first season with the Lakers. He is on an expiring $15.5 million deal.
