The Los Angeles Lakers enter the 2026 NBA playoffs with both momentum and uncertainty after securing the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference. Their reward is a first-round matchup against Kevin Durant and the Houston Rockets, with Los Angeles holding home-court advantage in Games 1, 2, 5 and 7, if necessary.
That advantage, however, comes with a major complication: the Lakers are still without Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, both of whom remain sidelined indefinitely after suffering injuries in the April 2 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Doncic is recovering from a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, while Reaves is dealing with a Grade 2 left oblique injury. Head coach JJ Redick said Tuesday there is still no firm timetable for either player’s return (via ESPN’s Dave McMenamin).
The NBA released the first-round playoff schedule Tuesday, and the spacing may offer some optimism for Los Angeles. Game 1 is set for Saturday, April 18, at Crypto.com Arena, followed by Game 2 in Los Angeles before the series shifts to Houston for Game 3 on Friday, April 24.
Because the Houston opener comes roughly three weeks after Doncic and Reaves’ injuries and a potential Game 5 would arrive on May 1, around the four-week mark, the Lakers may still have a pathway to reintegrate one or both guards later in the series if they can extend it.

Doncic was the Lakers’ offensive engine throughout the regular season, averaging a league-best 33.5 points, alongside 8.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds in 64 games, while Reaves delivered a career-best 23.3 points per game as the team’s secondary creator and perimeter scorer. Together with LeBron James, they formed one of the league’s most productive trios.
That puts even more pressure on James, who has responded as expected since the injuries struck. In the four games he played since Doncic and Reaves went down, the league’s all-time leading scorer averaged 25.5 points, 11.0 assists and 6.8 rebounds, earning Western Conference Player of the Week honors while guiding Los Angeles to a 3-1 finish to close the regular season.
At 41, he now enters another playoff run as the team’s primary scorer. However, against a Rockets team that boasts Durant, Amen Thompson and Alperen Sengun, James will be facing one of the toughest tests of his long career.
On Tuesday, after practice, coach JJ Redick spoke about the team’s approach: “We’ve got to have a playoff mentality this time of year, and I thought our guys did that and they executed it really well.”
Game 1 tips off at 8:30 pm ET on Saturday and will air on ABC. Until Doncic and Reaves are cleared, the Lakers’ hopes may rest on James’ ability to steady the series early and buy time for reinforcements to arrive.
