Lakers reportedly considering signing veteran guard Isaiah Thomas

Isaiah Thomas is hoping to make an NBA comeback, and the Los Angeles Lakers might be willing to give him a chance.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Lakers have considered signing the veteran point guard. The addition of Thomas is "far from assured," Stein writes, but L.A. is looking for "additional backcourt punch" and wing depth this summer.

Thomas proved that he can still compete at a high level after scoring 81 points in a Crawsover Pro-Am game in Seattle on Sunday. He scored 40 points in the first half, which is something he never did at the NBA level.

Some of Thomas' best seasons in the NBA came when he was a member of the Boston Celtics from 2015-2017. He was then traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers as part of the Kyrie Irving trade prior to the 2017-18 campaign.

Since then, it's been hard for Thomas to stay healthy and find playing time. He's played for five different teams since leaving Boston, most recently with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Thomas played three games with the Pelicans on a 10-day contract last season. During that time, the veteran guard averaged 7.7 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game while shooting 33.3% from the field.

The 32-year-old spent the 2019-20 campaign with the Washington Wizards, averaging 12.2 points, 1.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game while shooting 40.8% from the field.

Thomas would more than likely come off the bench for L.A. after the Lakers recently acquired star point guard Russell Westbrook from the Washington Wizards.

In addition to Westbrook, the Lakers have added several new faces this summer, including Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Trevor Ariza, Kent Bazemore, Malik Monk and Kendrick Nunn. They also parted ways with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Kyle Kuzma, Alex Caruso, Montrezl Harrell and Markieff Morris.
