The Lakers are winning, but they are still looking.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Los Angeles is actively monitoring the trade market for a defensive wing upgrade, and Pelicans forward Herbert Jones has emerged as a name high on the internal wish list.
Scotto reports that Jones is viewed by league sources as one of the premier three-and-D targets available, even if availability remains very much in question.
That is the tricky part.
New Orleans has not shown interest in moving Jones, reports suggest, and the Pelicans continue to view him as part of their long-term core. Still, as is often the case, that stance could soften if a significant offer is placed on the table.
Jones, 27, has appeared in 19 games this season and is averaging 9.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists while shooting just under 40 percent from the field.
His value, of course, is not tied to scoring. The former second-round pick earned All-Defensive First Team honors last season and remains one of the league’s most versatile perimeter defenders.
The Lakers sat at 18-7 entering Thursday and were third in the Western Conference — but the defense has lagged behind the record. They rank in the middle of the league in points allowed and defensive efficiency, an area the front office believes must improve to make a real championship push.
Jones fits the profile. Whether the Pelicans are willing to listen is the real question.
