The Lakers are in agreement with free agent guard Quentin Grimes on a four-year contract worth $60MM, sources tell Shams Charania of ESPN ( Twitter link). According to Charania, the fourth year will be a player option.

Grimes, 26, has appeared in 318 regular season games over five NBA seasons with the Knicks, Pistons, Mavericks, and Sixers. He has mostly been used in a three-and-D role during that time, providing solid perimeter defense while knocking down 36.6% of 5.1 three-point tries per game over the course of his career.

However, the former Houston Cougar has also shown off a broader skill set, particularly during a 28-game stretch in the second half of 2024/25 for the tanking Sixers, when he took on a primary offensive role and averaged 21.9 points and 4.5 assists per game on relatively efficient shooting (.469/.373/.752). His play-making carried over to this past season, when he averaged a career-high 3.3 assists per contest.

As a Laker, Grimes will likely take on a similar role to the one he played in Philadelphia, where he was essentially the third guard in the rotation behind Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, often playing alongside one or both of those players. Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves will be playing the Maxey and Edgecombe roles in Los Angeles, with Grimes providing secondary play-making and floor spacing.

The Lakers will sign Grimes using a portion of their cap room, which is also being used to bring in Walker Kessler (via sign-and-trade) and Sandro Mamukelashvili (on a four-year deal). Collin Sexton has reportedly agreed to a deal that should fit into the team’s room exception.

The team is remaking its roster around Doncic and Reaves this offseason, with LeBron James planning to sign elsewhere, Marcus Smart agreeing to a deal with Houston, Luke Kennard headed to Phoenix, and Rui Hachimura expected to depart as well.
