Lakers Waiving Shake Milton To Create Room For Marcus Smart, More Moves Likely

The Lakers are waiving guard Shake Milton and his $3 million contract for the 2025-26 season, according to a report from ESPN’s Shams Charania. The move is part of a broader cap-clearing effort as Los Angeles prepares to officially add veteran guard Marcus Smart.

Milton, 28, spent the back half of last season with the Lakers after a short stint in Detroit. He appeared in 21 games for L.A. and was viewed as backcourt depth more than a long-term piece.

The Lakers are now $3.9 million below the league’s first luxury tax apron, per ESPN front office insider Bobby Marks. Smart is owed $5.1 million for the coming season, meaning another move will be needed to finalize the signing.

Los Angeles recently exercised its $2.3 million team option on Jordan Goodwin, a 25-year-old guard known for his hustle and energy. But Smart’s arrival could complicate Goodwin’s path to minutes, especially if the Lakers remain committed to giving their veterans the bulk of the backcourt workload.

Only $25,000 of Goodwin’s deal is currently guaranteed, though that number jumps to fully guaranteed in January if he remains on the roster.

Milton averaged 3.9 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 30 games.

The Lakers have prioritized experience and grit this offseason, with Smart fitting the mold. But the roster still feels fluid, and more transactions may be on the horizon as L.A. continues to juggle its tax position and rotation questions.
