The Warriors are keeping their options open as the February 5 trade deadline approaches. But one name continues to hover over everything.
Jonathan Kuminga remains the trade chip, and league sources tell Marc Stein of The Stein Line that finding a workable Kuminga deal is a priority.
That said, Golden State is not boxed in. If no strong offer materializes, the Warriors are comfortable holding onto him and trying to rebuild his value heading into the offseason.
Before Kuminga suffered ankle and knee issues in Thursday’s game, the plan was reportedly to ramp up his minutes as a showcase of sorts. Then again, he will sit out Saturday’s game in Minnesota due to left knee soreness, per ESPN’s Anthony Slater.
One idea floating around the league? A potential reunion with Andrew Wiggins. Stein reports Golden State has interest in exploring a framework that could send Kuminga to the Heat in a Wiggins-centered deal.
The math, however, is tricky. Wiggins makes more than Kuminga, and the Warriors are hard up against the second apron. Any realistic trade would require additional salary and careful cap maneuvering.
In other words, conversations are happening. Options are being explored. But nothing is simple, and nothing is guaranteed.
