Injuries are a part of professional sports, but the Los Angeles Lakers sustained them late in the regular season with both Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves going down. Without their top two scoring guards, the Lakers had to elevate Bronny James into their rotation at the start of the playoffs.
While it was spot minutes, Game 3 against the Houston Rockets was a special moment for Bronny as he drilled a 3-pointer and caught a lob from his father LeBron James. LeBron spoke to his son’s growth and him stepping up in a crucial postseason game on the road to help the Lakers.
“You know one of the things that I came into this season, obviously last year was challenging for everybody and he was learning his ways on being a professional, whatever the case may be his rookie year,” LeBron said on his Mind the Game podcast. “But, he’s made so many strides in his second year and it resulted in him taking the moment. Obviously without AR, without Luka, he was next man up. He was one of the guys that had to step up in his absence and to share that moment in Game 3, I believe we scored 10 straight points between the two of us. I think we both had a 3 and we both had a layup, whatever the case may be. I was able to throw him a lob and we had that mini run between the two of us. And that was just something that I would never ever forget. I’ve learned obviously at my elder stage and being 41-years-old to kind of appreciate the small wins in the moment. And that was one of the moments where I’ve always been locked in and that moment right there throwing him the lob, seeing him make the 3, we kind of going back and forth, I kind of blanked out for a little bit. I really just accepted and relished in that moment. That’s pretty cool for me as a dad and then us as colleagues and then our whole family. I think I mentioned at one point, my mom being at the game and her being able to watch her son and grandson in a postseason game at the same time. It’s the same time my wife was there, like my wife was there, his sister was there, I think Bryce was back home from college, he was at a playoff [game]. You can’t even write that script in Hollywood better than what’s going on. So, just being super appreciative of it.”
It is great to see LeBron appreciating these memories as he does not know how much time he has left in his basketball career. Same goes for Bronny, as no one else can say they shared an NBA floor together with their father and that run they had against the Rockets will be an iconic moment in postseason history.
The second round has not treated the Lakers kindly so far and referees were a topic of conversation following Game 2. LeBron voiced his displeasures with the officiating on the court and JJ Redick came to the star’s defense, saying that James has the worst whistle he’s ever seen.
