LeBron James confirms documentary is ‘in the works’

Apparently, those reports about a LeBron James documentary weren’t just chatter.

James essentially confirmed Monday that something is coming.

During an appearance on Boardroom Talks, James was discussing documentaries when he casually dropped this:

“I got a pretty good documentary in the works too,” he said. “It is gonna be electric when I’m done with it.”

Well then.

James didn’t provide any other details, including where the documentary will air or when it might be released. But his comments certainly line up with a report from Andrew Marchand of The Athletic late last month.

Marchand reported that James and ESPN were nearing an agreement on a behind-the-scenes documentary series chronicling the final chapter of James’ NBA career. At the time, sources described negotiations as being at the “one-yard line.”

The project reportedly would include footage from James’ final seasons, along with previously unseen material accumulated over the years.

Longtime NBA Entertainment producer Andy Thompson has reportedly been documenting James for quite some time. Thompson also served as the principal videographer for ESPN’s The Last Dance, the enormously successful series centered on Michael Jordan and the Bulls.

So the cameras have apparently been rolling. The footage has apparently been accumulating. And now James himself says a documentary is indeed “in the works.”

The only real questions are when we’ll see it, how much we’ll see and exactly where James’ story ends before somebody starts editing the final episode.

Given that James has already described his move to Philadelphia as the final move of his NBA career, that ending may not be all that far away.

And whenever it comes, James seems fairly confident about the finished product. “Electric” sets a reasonably high bar.
